What is Addiction Therapy?
Addiction Therapy is one of the main issues many are facing in today’s society. Excessive or out of control use of alcohol, drugs, sex, food, and time spent on social media could become a problem if used as sources of validation or as mechanisms to numb feelings and emotions.
Considering quitting any substance or a behavior, whether or not you feel it is an addiction, may mean a change of lifestyle, and a “makeover” in the way you think and make decisions in your life.
How Addiction Therapy can help?
In my Century City, CA addiction therapy practice, I have been helping clients with addiction-related issues for the past 11 years using a dual-diagnosis prospective. This means that I look at both the psychological components that lead to addiction, while also treating the compulsive behaviors that lead to/exacerbate the addiction.
During an addiction therapy session, I focus my sessions on three main components: Stages of Change and Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Psychodynamic Therapy to help patients understand the origins of their impulsive thoughts and behaviors.
I believe that treating addiction is possible by empowering the individuals and their families by promoting optimal wellness of mind, body, and spirit though the lens of strengths rather than weaknesses.
Abstinence or Harm Reduction?
Not everyone is open to full abstinence and the 12-Step modality; which is why I work from both a total abstinence modality and harm reduction modality in my addiction therapy practice in Century City. Over the years, I realized that in addiction counseling it is important to consider the client’s prospective on how to approach their addiction, and to allow the client to decide what is the best course of treatment for them. This will assist the client to feel empowered and have a choice, and options, in their recovery.
